Initiated by Juan Montero Valdes and Eugenia Morpurgo, Don’t run – explores the possibility of a collaborative open production line for shoe making and design.

The use of rapid manufacturing machines such as laser cutters are used alongside revised and simplified assembly methods to introduce a new form of manufacturing to the high street. Creating an entirely personal and innovative system of production and consumption.

In Rotterdam the public are invited to come and influence the design process and will be encouraged to join the assembly line and test our production methodology. One fortunate participant will walking away with a pair of custom made don’t run shoes

Mind Map
2013 – ongoing

This map is a model for my PhD thesis about Design-Improvisation. I drew this map because I needed to organize all the examples and theories I collected for my thesis during the last two years. While a text only has a linear structure, the graphic shows everything at the same time, so new connections and constellations appear. Thus, the different subjects and theories are linked with each other. Most of the examples are designs from people I know, or they come from projects I did myself.

This is already the 3rd mapping that I made, but it is the most detailed one:I had written quite a lot, while my doctoral advisor, Juliane Rebentisch, encouraged me to make a drawing that shows which examples are relevant. At that point I was actually lost in masses of text. The map works as a tool: I attached it to the wall in my office and it helps me to find my way through the writing process.

The thesis is supervised by Bernhard E. Bürdek, Juliane Rebentisch and Peter Eckart.

The Machine meets The Future in the Making

September 19, 14.30 pm, MAD-faculty Genk

On Wednesday, 19th September 2012, The Machine has an encounter with Joseph Grima, editor in chief of Domus magazine. During Milan Design Week he presented the exhibition “The Future in the Making” that points out how designers make their own tools, systems and materials.

On the occasion of the lecture Jan Boelen, the curator of The Machine, and Joseph Grima hosts a series of guests at the MAD-faculty in Genk. Jesse Howard will talk about his collaboration on the OpenStructures idea, Dik Scheepers and Luc Damen will present how they made a spot welder out of a microwave, designer Agata Niemkiewicz will refer on her experience of crowd sourcing, Israeli designer Itay Ohaly on the idea of a self-made assembly line. Finally Danny Leen and Katrien Dreessen (FabLab Genk) will speak about their experience of the Hack A Thing workshop they initiated in context of The Machine.

Kick-off is with a free guided tour at 1pm by Jan Boelen. The lecture starts at 2.30 pm. Register at info@the-machine.be. Places are limited. Make sure to be there on time.

Paul Devens works with architecture, sound, video and performance. Custom made for the exhibition of ‘The Machine’ Paul Devens composed a soundscape that moves in between the memory of sounds that accompanied the industrial revolution and the reality of the almost soundless automated processes of today. The composition appropriates recorded sounds of ship engines and construction sites as well as electronic generated sounds and the sounds of hacked toy instruments. The soundscape travels sonically through the various spaces of the exhibition at C-mine.

For the sound installation Paul Devens was assisted by Chaim van Luit, Jörg Theissen and Thomas Rutgers.

2012 – ongoing

The ‘Group project’ is a non-linear design method in which objects are divided and broken into different parts.
Each part is developed by a designer, according to a specific theme and set of instructions.
The designers create their part without communicating to the other designers. Following a phase of adjustments, all parts are assembled creating a surprising, unexpected result.
This kind of method composes a group exhibition within a single object. Each designer’s different approach and style are expressed together in one object, establishing a dialogue between the objects parts.
For the ‘Machine’ exhibition, 9 designers collaborated to create 3 objects. These objects were designed according to the theme “The C-mine”.

The designers:
Joong Han Lee – chair’s seat
Agata Karolina – chair’s back
Christian Fiebig – table’s leg
Amelia Desnoyers – table’s top
Eugenia Morpurgo – table’s drawer
Nati Moskovich – lamp’s base

Five selected design duos from around the region will spend 14 hours shut in the exhibition, experimenting with new uses of the machines, materials and technologies. The results of these experiments will be on display during the exhibition.

Dates: 14–15 July, 21–22 July, 28–29 July, 4–5 Aug, 11–12 Aug
from Saturday 11.00 to Sunday 18.00

Karen Wuytens and Jan Kuppers (B)
14–15 July
As a designer of jewellery and other objects, Karen enjoys experimenting with new materials and techniques. In her artistic work for her PhD in design processes, she works with the technique of 3D printing. She has invited the product designer Jan Kuppers to join her.
www.karenwuytens.com www.kuppers.be

Johan Bruninx (B) – 21–22 July
Johan is known as a designer for his ‘mashups’, which combine old with new, materials with technique and design with art.
www.bruninx.com

Dik Scheepers and Luc Daamen (NL)
28–29 July
Dik is a curious designer: what makes design interesting to him is the research that precedes a new technique or an unknown material. Dik has invited jewellery designer Luc Daamen to join him.
www.dikscheepers.nl www.lucdaamen.nl

Lore Langendries (B) – 4–5 August
Lore designs ornaments and objects in which she examines the boundary between reproducability and non-reproducability in an industrial context.
www.lorelangendries.com

Linde Hermans and Noortje De la Haye (B)
11–12 August
No challenge is too much for the product designer Linde, especially if it means getting better acquainted with a new material or technique. She has invited the graphic designer Noortje De la Haye to join her.

The aim of the Hack-a-thing workshop is to give everyday things a new use. Based on the principles of open source and social design, teams of designers, artists, code doctors and hackers set to work with youngsters living near C-mine.

Hack-a-thing comprises two weekends. The first weekend is aimed explicitly at local youngsters and starts with an introduction to electronics and technologies such as Arduino and laser cutting.
These two days end with the conception and creation of a number of prototypes based on objects (a hair drier, washing machine, games console, …) the participants brought themselves.
The second phase works with an ‘open call for participation’. Hacking experts continue working with local youngsters on the hacked objects from the first phase.

A selection of objects will be shown in the exhibition space of ‘The Machine’ in the C-mine Designcentrum.
